^Actually.
Narinig ko sa UP (Overheard at UP)
AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA OMG MARK! How did you get here? XDDDDDD
if you are from any campus of UP, you MUST read this.
“For a number of us in the university, the most dangerous impact of the diminishing public character of the university is the erosion of the ideological mooring of service to the country and to the people among the students and among the faculty with the prominence being given to market rates as the standard for tuition and for salaries. Already, some quarters in the university have adopted Iskolar para sa bayan rather than Iskolar ng Bayan, a term which emerged during the height of martial law and which captures the fact that UP students are subsidized by the public and have an obligation to serve the people. This is not true for the term iskolar para sa bayan which can encompass Ateneos description of person for others “

I Will Derive
So I thought back to Calculus.
Way back to Newton and to Leibniz,
And to problems just like this.
And just like that when I had given up all hope,
I said nope, there’s just one way to find that slope.
And so now I, I will derive.
Find the derivative of x position with respect to time.
It’s as easy as can be, just have to take dx/dt.
I will derive, I will derive! The former Math Major in me finds this really amusing. XD It’s annoyingly catchy too.
To all my friends who’re taking Math 100 or the 50 series <3 KEEP CALM AND SURVIVE DERIVE.
When still part of the age-old University Belt, the University of the Philippines was home to only three colleges. They sat on the stretches of Padre Faura and R. Hidalgo streets in Manila.
But that was a hundred and three years ago.
Now, the colleges and private centers feeding it have become more diverse, much like the students. Past its centennial year, the University could either be a premier academic institution, a thriving business center, or a science park. Name it.
Very interesting read.
I just sent my resume over to Vibal Foundation. It’s absolutely excruciating to– *ping* Oh shoot. They sent a~! Oh damn, it’s just a bot message. :|
On other news, I’m very much excited to dedicate a few of my Mondays to the academe by being a research assistant. This’d be truly valuable to me who’s yet to take Psych118.
Yet other news, I’ve just finished reading a short by Kafka- The Imperial Message. It’s very interesting (and from some perspective, threatening). What say you?
An Imperial Message
by Franz Kafka Translation by Ian Johnston
The Emperor—so they say—has sent a message, directly from his death bed, to you alone, his pathetic subject, a tiny shadow which has taken refuge at the furthest distance from the imperial sun. He ordered the herald to kneel down beside his bed and whispered the message in his ear. He thought it was so important that he had the herald speak it back to him. He confirmed the accuracy of verbal message by nodding his head. And in front of the entire crowd of those witnessing his death—all the obstructing walls have been broken down, and all the great ones of his empire are standing in a circle on the broad and high soaring flights of stairs—in front of all of them he dispatched his herald. The messenger started off at once, a powerful, tireless man. Sticking one arm out and then another, he makes his way through the crowd. If he runs into resistance, he points to his breast where there is a sign of the sun. So he moves forwards easily, unlike anyone else. But the crowd is so huge; its dwelling places are infinite. If there were an open field, how he would fly along, and soon you would hear the marvellous pounding of his fist on your door. But instead of that, how futile are all his efforts. He is still forcing his way through the private rooms of the innermost palace. Never will he win his way through. And if he did manage that, nothing would have been achieved. He would have to fight his way down the steps, and, if he managed to do that, nothing would have been achieved. He would have to stride through the courtyards, and after the courtyards through the second palace encircling the first, and, then again, through stairs and courtyards, and then, once again, a palace, and so on for thousands of years. And if he finally burst through the outermost door—but that can never, never happen—the royal capital city, the centre of the world, is still there in front of him, piled high and full of sediment. No one pushes his way through here, certainly not someone with a message from a dead man. But you sit at your window and dream of that message when evening comes.
That, or I wouldn’t be able to read the actual paper in the first place. :| I have to leech off another university’s EBSCO for chrissakes!
It’s been three weeks already into the campaign, and I’m dead beat with all the workload of going around the college, meeting new people in the dorms and speaking in front of a class, each period of each day… Yes, it’s tiring, but I can tell you right now - it is fulfilling.
Seeing what lies ahead makes me more idealistic. I’ve seen the people in this picture talk about what they could do in the USC, what they can act upon once elected and I could see the passion in their eyes. I grew admiration to these people because they are not only rational, they have this burning desire of getting the ball rolling. Every time we meet and talk about our day’s performance in the campaign, though tired from walking around the university, they make it a point to share learnings, what people in their classrooms had to say, and what they thought we need to spruce up once in council.
These people are our best option for the USC. I’m saying this not because I’m from Alyansa, but because I am a concerned Iskolar Para sa Bayan. We need leaders who not only talk the talk, but leaders who would make others realize that they’re in it as much as the leaders themselves are. This is the thing that lacks in the USC, making students empowered and realize that they are the USC.
In four days’ time, we would know what the pulse of the students are, the election of the USC would be start of real change, cliche as it may sound. Putting these people into the council would be the realization of this desire of changing the system, of revitalizing student involvement, of bringing renewed vigor into the University’s motto of HONOR and EXCELLENCE!
I hope fellow ISKOLARS PARA SA BAYAN would see that these people are our best option for the University Student Council. Kasama ka sa USC, kasama ka ISKOLAR PARA SA BAYAN!
