Rice farming defines Asian civilisation and the terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, on the northern island of Luzon, are a 2000-year-old icon of agricultural heritage. Known as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’, the man-made terraces cling to impossibly steep valleys and meld seamlessly with nature’s verdant backdrop. Symbolic of sacred folklore and ingenuity, many terraces are now neglected as the modern world lures young farmers to the city, and the site is ill-equipped for large numbers of visitors.

This Is Important, You Should Know About It of the Day: Openly lesbian Syrian blogger Amina Arraf, who fearlessly wrote about her country’s political turmoil at A Gay Girl in Damascus under the nom de plume Amina Abdallah, was abducted last night by armed men while on her way to a meeting in Damascus.
Her cousin Rania wrote about the abduction on Amina’s blog: “Amina was seized by three men in their early 20s. According to the witness (who does not want her identity known), the men were armed.” Rania goes on to report that the men covered Amina’s mouth and hustled her into “a red Dacia Logan with a window sticker of [president Bashar al-Assad’s deceased brother] Basel Assad.”
The Guardian says Amina — who is an American citizen as well — “had become increasingly popular after capturing the imagination of the Syrian opposition as the protest movement struggled in the face of the government crackdown.”
Supporters have taken to Facebook and Twitter to draw attention to Amina’s unlawful seizing, but, according to Rania, it’s unclear who took her or why. “Unfortunately, there are at least 18 different police formations in Syria as well as multiple different party militias and gangs,” she wrote in a recent update. “We do not know who took her so we do not know who to ask to get her back. It is possible that they are forcibly deporting her.”
Updates on Amina’s situation will be posted on her blog.

Do you see this baby?this beautiful baby?I bet you don’t know why he looks like this. You have no idea why there are tubes coming out of every part of his body, why he is hooked up to about 7 different machines that are monitoring everything from heart rate, and blood pressure, to oxygen and brain patterns.
He was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). A CHD is a defect that you are born with, more than 155,000 babies are born with one or more CHDs a year. That is over 3 times the amount of babies and children affected with cancer in a year. It is estimated that by 2015, over 500,000 children and adults under the age of 21 will be born with a CHD, and have at least one surgery to attempt to fix their defect. Almost one-third of the babies born with a CHD die before they are 8 years old.
Very few people know about Congenital Heart Defects, and there is not much research funds to try to improve the life of children born with these conditions. All I am asking is for you to reblog and get the word out. If more people will know, more people will donate and help support the cause.
By 2025, we want the number of babies born with heart defects to be cut in half - or more.

BAMFs of the Day: Over 200 retired Japanese professionals — dubbed the Skilled Veterans Corps — have volunteered to help bring stability to the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The volunteers — all over 60 years old — are lobbying the government to be allowed to replace some of the younger employees at the power station. “I am 72 and on average I probably have 13 to 15 years left to live,” says 72-year-old Yasuteru Yamada, a former engineer. “Even if I were exposed to radiation, cancer could take 20 or 30 years or longer to develop. Therefore us older ones have less chance of getting cancer.”

Though grateful, both the government and TEPCO remain tentative about accepting the senior citizens’ offer. “It is on the way but it is a very, very sensitive issue politically,” Yamada told BBC News. Goshi Hosono, the prime minister’s special adviser to the nuclear crisis, controversially referred to the group as the “suicide corps” in a press conference.

“I don’t think I’m particularly special,” Michio Ito, a retired primary school teacher, is quoted as saying. “Most Japanese have this feeling in their heart. The question is whether you step forward, or you stay behind and watch.”

In the Philippines, watching the evening news is the same as watching a drama series.

Earlier, while eating dinner, my siblings and I were tuned in and watching the evening news in GMA7. They featured the story about ‘crush videos’ - videos that feature people literally crushing all sorts of animals, apparently catering to the fetish of seeing objects (in this case animals) being stepped on. The news went on to say that there is a possibility of crush videos being produced in the Philippines for some time now, as one may upload it and viewers will pay to see it. The NBI are on the case and have leads as to the possible perpetrators of such horrendous acts, but GMA7 just had to ‘own’ that scoop.

I watched in horror as the video continued way past what the NBI supplied, as it now features one of their reporters going to Northern Luzon, to the town and possibly to the very room where the crush videos were being shot.

Did they not know of the possible repercussions of doing that?! They just gave away sensitive information, and may have actually helped the suspect to go into hiding! WTF?! Did they not learn ANYTHING at all from covering the hostage crisis? Weren’t they smart enough to understand that the regulations they promised to implement would still apply in cases such as this?

Oh but they just had to go beyond that. Afterall, what is mainstream Philippine news without a generous helping of drama? The reporter now shares details of the room, pointing to features that are comparable to those seen in the videos. They needn’t show the video at all- they could’ve at least considered those who were eating at the moment, but no! As the reporter to the windows, to the ceiling, they insert cuts of the video in between comparisons, with just the face of the perpetrator pixelated (not how she was crushing the dog)!

Just fucking deliver news, please! Don’t make it into a drama series! I can appreciate the knowledge, but there are something best left unsaid, at least until the proper time.

Anti-smoking ban? Meh.

adishey:

So tomorrow, an anti-smoking ban will be implemented in Metro Manila, Philippines. According to an article published online in PhilStar, the local government will be reprimanding anyone found smoking in major and secondary roads (Carcamo, 2011). They will be given a fine of Php 500 or render an eight-hour community service.

Sounds good?

(Of course!

Yeah, okay.

Maybe.)

No.

Personally, I am skeptical about this regulation. While I am not a smoker (thus very very glad when I first read the article), I know many people who are. My father is a smoker, for example. Do you know what he said to me when we talked about it this morning?

“Di na pwede magsigarilyo sa kalsada. Ibig sabihin sa bahay na lang pwede.” [We can’t smoke in public areas anymore. That means, we can only smoke at home.]

Immediately I thought, ‘If Dad thinks this way, how many other people think the same?’

Do you know how many people in Metro Manila smoke? No? Well, it’s around 74% of Metro Manila’s population. Do you know how many people live in the city? Around 200, 000 (or more). That would mean there are 148, 000 smokers in a 619.5 sq. km piece of land. How many of them could have possible thought the same as my dad?

I’m not saying people should continue smoking in public places, but don’t you think confining smokers in their homes is deadlier?

Do you know what third-hand smoke is? We all know that secondhand smoke (SHS) is tobacco smoke diffused in the environment, and secondhand smoking—or passive smoking—is when a non-smoker inhales said tobacco smoke. On the other hand, a third-hand smoke is the composed of tiny particles of tobacco smoke that remain well after the cigarette has been extinguished. These particles then stick to clothes, couches, curtains and the like. Unlike secondhand smoke, the tiny particles that make up third-hand smoke are more easily consumed by our bodies. Consequently, these particles are more hazardous than secondhand smoke precisely because they are smaller. They are also more dangerous because third-hand smoke can remain for days.

Now I will give you a simple example of third-hand smoking: There’s this mother who doesn’t smoke, but her co-workers do. Said mother has a three-year old daughter whom she hugs every night when she goes home from work. Who do you think is the third-hand smoker?

If people will be restrained to smoking at home, what do you think are the chances of third-hand smokers rising in population? If my dad smokes in the family room everyday, chances are those third-hand smoke will permanently permeate the couch.

Am I making sense to you?

Don’t even get me started on forcing people (i.e. my Dad) to stop smoking. I’ve personally learned that most smokers will only stop using their own will. Let’s not go down that path; my rant is long enough.

In the end, what I’m trying to say is that I think there could be a better, more practical solution to the smoking problem in Metro Manila. But then even before that could happen (much less be successful), it would need the cooperation of the smokers. So, yeah. Anyway, we’ll see what happens… later.

—-

Read what third-hand smoke is all about here.

I can’t help but agree. *sigh of defeat* I remember a similar policy that the Marikina City government tried to implement (at least with PUVs), but considering the number of drivers and passengers that get to smoke within the city nowadays, I guess that regulation failed.

So yes, I’m afraid that this Anti-smoking campaign wouldn’t work- and I’m not being pessimistic about this. :(

Tension Headaches
A tension headache is generally a diffuse, mild to moderate pain that’s often described as feeling like a tight band around your head. A tension headache — or tension-type headache as it’s medically known — is the most common type of headache, and yet its causes aren’t well understood.
It may feel as if muscle contractions are responsible for your head pain, which is why this type of headache is generally referred to as a tension-type headache, though experts no longer think muscle contractions are the cause.
Fortunately, effective treatments for tension headaches are available. Managing a tension headache is often a balance between fostering healthy habits, finding effective nondrug treatments and using medications appropriately.
Signs and symptoms of a tension headache include:
Dull, aching head pain
The sensation of tightness or pressure across your forehead or on the sides and back of your head
Tenderness on your scalp, neck and shoulder muscles
Occasionally, loss of appetite
A tension headache can last from 30 minutes to an entire week. You may experience these headaches only occasionally, or nearly all the time. If your headaches occur 15 or more days a month for at least three months, they’re considered chronic. If you have headaches that occur fewer than 15 times in a month, your headaches are considered episodic. However, people with frequent episodic headaches are at a higher risk of developing chronic headaches.

And because lately, I’ve been having headaches, this is a good thing to come by.

Remember the ’90s? There was a particularly long anime we can all talk about and unanimously agree as an animation classic. The soundtrack is something you are sure to recognize and it won’t be a surprise if there’s a particular character or arc that’s been stuck to you. I’m talking about the runaway hit, Rurouni Kenshin, also known as Samurai X.

In case you don’t know yet, RUROUNI KENSHIN WILL HAVE A NEW ANIME SERIES OUT IN TIME FOR ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY. Hear that? Yes, that’s the sound of your awesome childhood coming back. More of that here.

Even more awesome, Watsuki-sensei has released new character designs for the RK cast for the kanzenban editions (with colored pages + other goodies). I’ll post some of my favorite new char designs here. The rest, you could check out through this post.

Willie Revillame and the Pinoy psyche

EMOTIONAL WEATHER REPORT By Jessica Zafra

(The Philippine Star) Updated April 17, 2011 12:00 AM

At the Philippine STAR-National Bookstore event F. Sionil Jose wondered why Willie Revillame is famous. It can’t just be the cash handouts — there are other TV personalities who give money away. The controversy that he generates — from suspensions for offensive behavior or language to sexual harassment charges to his ongoing legal battle with his former network — has not only failed to alienate his core audience, it seems to have made him more popular. His long, rambling speech before he went on leave from his show, pending yet another MTRCB review, may offer some useful clues.

Willie Revillame assumed the role of victim as he had many times in the past. He asked why he was being persecuted. He took issue with show business personalities who had criticized him on Twitter over the episode of the dancing 6-year-old boy. He was particularly offended by the statements of former child stars Lea Salonga and Aiza Seguerra. “Why are you doing this to me?” cried the “victim,” whose current network contract is said to guarantee him billions.

These are familiar statements because we have heard them from many mouths. They are the stock defense of every sidewalk vendor arrested for not having a permit, every policeman suspended on graft charges, and every politician caught stealing. “Why are you persecuting me?” and “I am the victim here.”

Politicians everywhere cry harassment when they get caught, but seldom do they wallow so deeply in claims of weakness. “You are oppressing me because I am small and helpless while you are big and powerful. Kawawa naman ako (Poor me). Ako ay maliit na tao lamang. (I am puny.)”

Where does this sense of victimhood come from? Is it a consequence of colonialism — t he mindset that our survival is subject to the whims of a ruling power? Is it our Catholic upbringing that emphasizes our frailty and advises us to throw ourselves upon the mercy of a higher power? Or is it the feudal structure of Philippine society, dating back to pre-colonial times and firmly in place, unchallenged, to this day?

Whatever — our relationship to power seems to be: I don’t have it, you have all of it, and you use it to oppress me.

It is widely assumed that Willie Revillame is popular because the masses want to be him, the guy who was reportedly planning to give away fifty cars on his 50th birthday. But what if we have it backwards? What if Willie Revillame is actually the embodiment of parts of our collective psyche that we refuse to acknowledge because we find them reprehensible? Do they idolize him because they want to be him, or because they ARE him?

He does seem to have an instinct for what will please the masa, an instinct that may have been schooled out of the educated classes. For instance we would die of embarrassment if we had to go on TV, reveal that we are destitute, and accept money from Willie Revillame. The lumpen proletariat do not have such qualms; in our country embarrassment is a middle-class affectation. Our notions of poverty are completely different: we view it as a temporary problem, but it is their constant, non-updating status. They will describe their misery to millions of strangers, weep on camera, take the money and jump for joy.

Consider, my friend the amateur sociologist says, how Willie Revillame hands out money. Certain forms are observed. He reaches into his pocket as if he were giving away his own personal funds, and he adopts a “confidential, just between us” manner, never mind that the cameras are all on him and everyone is watching.

It is also very Filipino Catholic, this notion that everyone is automatically entitled to pity and a handout. All you need is… need. And many of our people are always in need. At the same time, the definition of “helping” is forking over cash. Not jobs, not education, but cash right here and now. Recall the balikbayans lining up on Willie Revillame’s old show to give him dollars to distribute to the poor.

In one episode of his game show all the contestants were scavengers. First Willie Revillame asked them how much money they made from rooting in landfills. Then he asked them how many times they could afford to eat in one day. Finally he turned to the cameras and said, “That is the true state of the nation. You don’t need to watch the news to know that.”

No wonder the primetime news programs were worried. In an industry that regards ratings as the sole measure of success, ignorance is an asset convertible to cash. They have no moral authority over him. Hell, they made him.

It would be a disservice to the Filipino audience to say that they love Willie Revillame because he buys their affection. Clearly, he taps into the Pinoy psyche in a way that politicians can only dream of. He is not the problem, but its gaudiest manifestation. The problem is much bigger than a unfunny comedian with wads of cash, but no one will admit it because they need the ratings, they want to be politically-correct, and they aspire to get elected.

Twisted by Jessica Zafra

Pumping irony since 1994.

I don’t think that this is all there is to the Filipino psyche. “Playing the victim”, amongst others, is probably the most salient given the controversies that line WR’s history, however, I don’t think there has been any study conducted regarding this characteristic and so we continue to assume its causes, along with other Filipino traits or concepts.

There is a danger with allowing WR to continue to tap the Filipino psyche in a way that we do not understand, but the greater danger would be to remain poorly informed about our psyche and continue speculating cures to different manifestations of ‘community cancer’.

Would removing WR from the TV stage end the drama of exploiting the masses for their financial needs? Would canceling the show and applying stricter regulations improve the quality of other shows being produced by Philippine networks? We can continue to fashion remedies for each and every problem we face, but we’re only dealing with them on the surface-level.

Before anything, it is important to know the enemy, as well as ourselves. This is the Filipino psyche we’re talking about- we could never truly detach ourselves from it, though there are advantages at looking at the nature of it from different perspectives. Only then can we create suitable, long-lasting measures to hopefully, eradicate the problems that our society faces.
