CAFE ROTTENMEIER

Never going to chalk up to conventional maid/butler cafes for a simple reason- your grandmother might as well be working here.

I was just browsing through my mail client when I came across an RSS-feed featuring this. Above description is a bit of an exaggeration unless you live with your grandmother in an area near the cafe. But then again, college students and other professionals are being hired to dress and act the part if they aren’t grannies themselves. Away from the usual ‘moe moe kyun’ and ‘fanservice/fangirling’-powered franchise that is the maid/butler cafe, Cafe Rottenmeier is a tribute to the maid of the same name in Heidi, an animated adaptation of the famous book and considered a cultural artifact.

Yes, that is indeed Col. Sanders in front of KFC in Japan, dressed as a maid.

I randomly came across a similar photo while looking at a Japanese snack review blog. On the same day, one of my friends PMs me a link to a photo of the Colonel in yet another costume. I knew I had to delve more into the matter, so I simply Googled “KFC Japan”. It brought me… such great joy.

I can understand them dressing him up to add cheer during certain occasions like festivals…

The watermelon prop is a nice touch. This must be from around the time of the Summer Festival.

I cannot imagine what time of year would be appropriate for Spider-Colonel. But I am not complaining.
